Manchester by the Sea’s writer/director Kenneth Lonergan is to pen a new four-hour event series based on E.M. Forster’s classic novel, Howards End.

The adaptation, a co-production between Starz and the BBC, will be directed by White Girl helmer Hettie Macdonald. Hayley Atwell will portray Margaret Schlegel, Matthew Macfadyen is Henry Wilcox, and Tracey Ullman is Aunt Juley Mund in the series.

The novel explores class divisions and the changing social landscape through the three turn of the century families – one upper class, one working class, and one of idealistic intellectuals.

Howards End is due to beginning filming around London for release on BBC One in the UK and on Starz in the US.
