VOLVO 144/145/142Classic Car
Volvo’s reputation for safety first, style second started in earnest with the 140-series. These big and boxy cars, built from 1967 to 1974, were uncompromising in their looks but thoroughly protected their occupants. The third figure of the model designation denoted the number of doors; thus the 142 had two, the 144 had four, and the 145 was the five-door estate. At first, the 1778cc engine was all that was available, albeit with twin carburettors on the S models, but 1986cc engines became standard in 1968. Best was the 1970’s GL, with fuel injection and leather upholstery.
