Topping off the Vauxhall tree of the late-1970s were the Royale saloons and coupés, Anglicised versions of Opel’s Senator and Monza models. Aside from the front grille and badges, they were identical to their Opel counterparts and were even built in Germany. The saloons were four-door, coupés had two with a hatchback. The 2784cc six-cylinder engine gave a reassuring 138bhp, but the big bruiser was 1980’s 2968cc fuel-injected version, with a dramatic rise in power to 180bhp and, with it, the ability to top 130mph. Less kudos than an Opel but still sought-after.
