Backed by Chastain’s stellar turn, The Zookeeper’s Wife is a visually striking experience that will haunt one long after they’ve left the theater.

Niki Caro has the rare ability to elevate what could be emotionally manipulative schlock to earnest art.

The fate of a Warsaw zoo during the Nazi occupation might seem like a tiny historical footnote, but as director Niki Caro’s handsome drama shows, the way people treat animals is a good indicator of how they’ll treat human beings.
2946d ago
The film's flaws in pacing and suspense are easily overlooked in the shadow of Chastain's moving performance, as well as the performances of those around her. Caro unspools an evergreen tale about the clarifying power of empathy to diffuse fear and hatred.

Is there a true, inspiring World War II story still left untold? It’s hard to name a subject more exhaustively plundered by Hollywood, though The Zookeeper’s Wife does at least have something to set it apart from its endless predecessors: lions and tigers and bears (also: elephants, cheetahs, a bald eagle, and a live bison birth).

Sad timeliness provides The Zookeeper’s Wife with more power than it earns.

For what it’s worth, Chastain is as good as ever, but it’s a shame that such a gripping, tender, and vulnerable performance is lost in a period drama as flat as this one. At a point in our nation, when stories like this can hold such valuable weight, it’s unfortunate for “The Zookeeper’s Wife” to fall short.

True-story drama about animal lover who helped Jews flee the Nazis can't escape clichés – but does boast excellent lead performance.
2946d ago
It imbues a pessimistic view of the seemingly bottomless depths of human cruelty with sorrowful tragic force.

The true story of a couple helping Jews at the Warsaw Zoo during the second world war has moments of power but also suffers from an uneven script.
2946d ago
It's a great—and as yet untold—story: Jan Zabinski and Antonina Zabinska, Polish husband and wife zookeepers, owners of the Warsaw Zoo, opened their zoo to Jewish refugees after the September 1939 German invasion of Poland, and continued to "host" people throughout the occupation, smuggling them out of the Warsaw ghetto, hiding them in animal cages and basement tunnels leading from the house to the zoo.

The extraordinary true story of a woman (played by Jessica Chastain) who sheltered Jews in the Warsaw Zoo during the Holocaust gets a conventional big-screen treatment.
2946d ago
A true-life Holocaust tale built around an impossibly perfect heroine.
2946d ago
Ms. Chastain’s watchful, layered performance helps keep the film on an even keel, but it is not enough to prevent The Zookeeper’s Wife, with its reassuringly cuddly critters, from feeling like a Disney version of the Holocaust.
2946d ago
A radiant Jessica Chastain helps The Zookeeper’s wife shine.
2946d ago
Turning an incredible true story of a couple who sheltered Jews into bland historical fare is the most noteworthy of the film’s shortcomings.

In a production based on a nonfiction book by Diane Ackerman, a brilliantly specific story has been reduced to conventional drama and synthetic heroics.
