Standard’s small car offering was surprisingly lively considering its one-litre sidevalve engine. Built either side of WW2, the later cars lost the ‘Flying’ part of their name and are visually distinguished by a lack of bonnet louvres. Perhaps more significantly, they all gained a four-speed gearbox in place of the old three-speed unit. All used Bendix cable brakes, which are fine as long as they are set up correctly. Tourer and drophead coupé models were also offered, but these are even harder to find. When you do, expect to pay at least 50% more than for a saloon.
