With Renault’s 4CV developed in secret in occupied France during the war, it’s tempting to believe that this rear-engined car was influenced by certain German machines. The 4CV was launched in 1946 with an 18bhp 760cc four-cylinder engine, all-independent suspension and very chic and cuddly styling. More power – albeit from a smaller 747cc engine – came in 1950, and the gradual advancements continued until 1961. Most intriguing was the R1063 Sport, with 42bhp. Not that much maybe, but in a car this light and small, more than enough to turn it into a real terrier.
