The 20/30 range was a concerted move upmarket from Renault – and to prove the point, it was the V6-powered 30 version that took the centre stage at the launch in March 1975. PRV power marked this out as the largest-engined Renault since WW2, and gave the car excellent performance. The four-cylinder 20 arrived a few months later, and was a much more rational choice, even if it lacked any real panache. Intended to replace the R16, but the more charismatic 1965 car remained in production for a further five years, proving that new was no better than old.
