The 16 can lay major claim to being the first modern hatchback. Its 1964 design seems to be a blueprint for much that came after it, with a lifting tailgate, two-box shape with a roomy interior, front-wheel-drive, lively alloy engine and disc brakes up at the head. There was even what could be regarded as a hot hatch from 1973, two years before the Golf GTI popularised the genre. This was the TX with a 1647cc 93bhp engine, five-speed transmission and quad-headlights. A very forward-thinking and well-behaved machine with a lot of typically French quirks to make it even more intriguing.
