It turns out the short run of original Turbos was merely a warm-up act for the main act. With an extra 300cc and an intercooler built into the rear spoiler, power jumped by another 40bhp, putting the 911 Turbo firmly in the supercar class. It also helped mask the previous car’s turbo lag to some extent, though it seems poor by modern standards. Further development to the suspension reduced the car’s power-off tail-wagging tendencies and improving safety, but the pay-off is a bone-jarring ride. A five-speed gearbox finally arrived for the 1989 model year.
