Despite its sales success, the original Mini had never made any money for BMC. So, successor British Leyland launched what they regarded as an enhanced version in 1969, which was accordingly more expensive. The Clubman had a longer, squared-off nose. The interior was enhanced with instruments now in front of the driver instead of in the centre and Hydrolastic suspension was retained until 1971. An estate was available from launch, complete with fake plastic wood trim down the sides. A cheap way into Mini ownership these days.
