The range-topping 300SE gets a mention of its own as there’s so much more to it. Extra chrome helps it stand out, but underneath there are real changes. Riding on self-levelling air suspension, the car also benefits from all-wheel disc brakes and has power steering as standard. That three-litre straight-six is a detuned version of the engine used in the 300SL, and there was a choice of four-speed manual or automatic transmission. From 1963 there is also a 300SEL, providing more room thanks to a four inch longer wheelbase.
