René Bonnet created the innovative car, but couldn’t make it pay, so Matra – who was already building the bodies – took it on to create the Matra-Bonnet Djet V. The body was light and it was powered by a tweaked Renault 8 Gordini engine, and it performed admirably thanks to a great power to weight ratio. The Djet proved useful in motor sport, too, giving Matra the impetus it needed to front line competition, both at Le Mans and in Formula 1.
