To show its commitment to the front-engined cause, Maserati introduced the Khamsin to sell alongside the Bora/Merak twins. Styling and body engineering was by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, and it was a most arresting design. The suspension and steering were closely related to the mid-engined cars but the high geared power assisted steering was lifted from the Citroën SM, and proved remarkably successful once owners had acclimatised to it. Poor interior layout and visibility were negated by the 320bhp from its 4.9-litre Indy engine – over 150mph was possible.
