In an attempt to widen the appeal of the GT, Ford engines replaced the expensive Volvo, while the sophisticated semi-trailing arm/de Dion rear suspension layout of the 1800 was thrown out in favour of a simpler live axle. Price was usefully lower and in kit form the 1500 proved a more popular choice than its more exotic predecessor – although only 290 were made in total. Performance predictably suffered, and the roadholding wasn’t as good, but widely available parts and specialist back-up today make them a sensible and charismatic DIY sports car.
