Despite the additional torque from the 4.2-litre XK engine, 150mph remained an elusive target for those owners lucky enough to have access to de-restricted motorways. But despite being limited to a top speed of ‘only’ 149mph, the E-type in 4.2-litre form remained a long way ahead of the opposition – cars that could match its speed were far more expensive; while similarly priced sports cars wouldn’t have seen which way it went. The 4.2 actually felt more grown up to drive, with its lower redline, prompting some to say the zest had gone.
