By the 1970s, everyone knew that the Mini needed a hatchback. But with BL firefighting elsewhere, it was a project that was prioritised behind more profitable models. However, Innocenti couldn’t wait amd commissioned Bertone to style a new hatchback body for its Mini, which was losing out against the Fiat 127 on the Italian market. The resulting car was stylish and had many people asking why BL couldn’t do the same. A few made it to the UK, but rust was a major problem. De Tomaso sporting model was a striking looking and apt replacement for the Mini Cooper.
