Patel is subdued yet excellent in Anthony Maras’s white-knuckle retelling of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks

They have a motto, “the guest is god,” and while that has heavy connotations of never-ending servitude (not super great), I think the real message here is wonderfully humane.

Hotel Mumbai is a great crowd pleaser but with a dangerously myopic narrative that, even with its flaws, serves a fitting tribute to the resilience of the people who lived and died through the terror attacks of 2008, but it definitely needs an audience which doesn’t believe everything it sees.

As the body count grows the film begins to feel manipulative. Especially a thread focused on the fate of David and Zahara’s baby. Whether that particular aspect of the story is true or not (it’s unclear) it’s inclusion seems only to push buttons in a traditional Hollywood narrative.

Still, after the substantially scaled catastrophe comes to an end, the question remains: what do we do with all this filmmaking dexterity when it serves an effort that, despite the best of intentions, feels exploitative and too soon?

Like rubbernecking at the scene of a global tragedy, Anthony Maras' ambitious docudrama uneasily re-creates the 2008 Mumbai attacks ... to what end?

Like other recent dramatizations of atrocity, the film, about the 2008 Islamist attacks in India, manipulates narrative tension to excite us, but the bleakness of historical facts produces a different kind of response.

It reduces the randomness of real-life bloodshed to the slick thrills of a popcorn movie. And after the mosque attacks in Christchurch, which led the film’s distributor in New Zealand to suspend the movie’s release there, its savagery is especially difficult to take.
