The word ‘Lotus’ was silently attached to the Escort Twin Cam, for this model was basically the Lotus Cortina engine and running gear clothed in the lighter two-door Escort bodyshell; something which made it even more of a wolf in sheepish clothing. Available from the start of MkI production in 1968, this 1558cc-engined machine had a very usable 106bhp – more than double that of the standard Escort 1100 – and a top speed of around 113mph. Constructed in limited numbers for homologation purposes. Production ended in 1971.
