One of the standout films set to premiere at next month's Locarno Film Festival is the latest work from Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov (Russian Ark, Mother and Son). Titled Fairytale (aka Skazka), the film combines newly shot material with archival footage to make a "civil and artistic statement about those who determined the fate of the planet: Stalin, Churchill, Mussolini, Hitler," as reported by a Russian newspaper. The first trailer has been released ahead of its Locarno debut. This Belgian co-production did not use any state funding. Although it was submitted to Cannes, Sokurov revealed that the festival organizers expressed concerns, stating they were "afraid to show it." He explained, "This is a film about history, it is hard for Europe, and it is also hard for us, for everyone." The film is now scheduled to make its debut in the Concorso internazionale section at Locarno, and a review will follow.
