The unassuming Austin A40 Farina is one of the most significant Austins ever. Why? Well it was the first Pininfarina-styled BMC car, the first ‘two box’ design and, in Countryman estate form with a split tailgate, has a claim to fame as one of the first hatchbacks. The 1958 Austin that would inform so many future models was mainly Austin A35 underneath its Italian suit, even down to the inferior hydro-mechanical brakes. Fortunately, these were changed to hydraulic on the 1961 MkII, while 1962 saw a 1098cc A-series slotted in.
