The 80 became a whole lot more interesting in 1973 when the Ingolstadt engineers installed a hot 100bhp version of the 1.6-litre under the bonnet. With a free-revving engine and tenacious handling – lower and stiffer suspension helped here – it proved a very effective Q-car. For 1976, the 80 range was revamped with larger headlamps and a plusher interior – and the GT became the GTE (’E’ being for einspritz: fuel injection). With 110bhp, it was a bit of a giant-killer on the road. Volkswagen approved, too, using the same engine in the Golf GTI.
