Dead Rising 4 Ditches Ticking Clock, No More Time Constraints For Zombie Sprees

A big shake up is coming to the Dead Rising series with the fourth game now revealed to be a remake of the original, starring photojournalist Frank West in Willamette, Colorado.

The entire series to-date has always had a time pressure as the minutes ticked away in seconds and the events of the campaign happened whether you wanted them to or not. It worked and many love the series for that constant countdown against them.

Not everyone enjoys being rushed along though and Dead Rising is a series that really makes you want to explore every nook and cranny for secrets and side activities, or to try and save every possible survivor you can. Dead Rising 4 takes a hammer to the clock.

Executive producer Bryce Cochrane says you will "not have to worry about a timer. If you wanna go kill zombies, you can. If you want to follow the campaign, you can do that as well". Dead Rising is the creation of Capcom and in the tradition of Japanese style games they have achievable ranked endings and these are tied to the clock.

Only when you have striven to unlock the S ranked ending do you get to glimpse the big picture of the game's story and the forces working behind the scenes. Hopefully some of this can be captured still in this post-timer Dead Rising.

Capcom Vancouver "love the timer based system" and won't ditch it entirely but will reserve it instead for multiplayer.

"For our main campaign we really felt we wanted people to explore our world, and be able to go everywhere they want to go. We don't want them to feel like they're under the gun, to find what they need to find, or get where they need to get”.

The PC community has always had the advantage when it comes to the timer in Dead Rising thanks to tinkering with the game code, but console fans not so much. The zombie count will be the highest it has ever been with Dead Rising 4 which releases for Windows 10 and Xbox One December 6th, 2016.
