Simon McQuoid to Direct Mortal Kombat Reboot

Mortal Kombat hasn’t hit as hard as since 1995 when it first made its cinematic bow thanks to Resident Evil helmer Paul W. S. Anderson. Sequels and a web series have followed but the rumours of a franchise reboot haven’t gone away; and now, it looks like this potential reboot has a director.

Ad director Simon McQuoid is to direct the new, currently untitled film.

While he may not be quite the attention-grabbing name required to suggest a confident start, there are a few names behind scenes that should alleviate those fears.

James Wan is aboard to produce for Warner Bros. and New Line through his Atomic Monster company. While Warner Bros. themselves seem open to a new take on the franchise after approving director Kevin Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, an online short starring Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White.

That led to Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which ran for two seasons as a web series featuring much of the same cast.

So far, the details are being kept under wraps but Greg Russo wrote the most recent draft of the script.
