First Images from The LEGO Batman Movie

Despite a certain other movie featuringBatman dominating headlines this week, there’s the small matter of another incarnationof the caped crusader who, after stealing the show in The LEGO Movie, is about to breakout in his own LEGO based spin-off.

The first images from The LEGO Batman movie, courtesy of USA Today,  has been revealed and it looks like business as usual for the super arrogant,super hero. 

The new adventure will offer a deeper dive into Batman's world, drawing on elements from every incarnation. We'll even get to see how he spends his time when he's not out fighting crime, or writing theme songs about his dark, orphan status.

“The Batcave is even better than weremembered it, it’s awesome” Will Arnett, the returning voice of Batman tellsthe paper. “But I also love getting into the ho-hum day-to-day of being Batman and what it’s like to fight crime each day. Like the idea of Batman oversleeping his alarm clock makes me laugh. It really does humanize him.

“We get down to that perfect sweet spot forBatman, but also having moments of hesitation,” says Arnett. “There’s nothingbetter than a guy who has this super-authoritative, brooding, voice but alsomoments where he’s a bit unsure,” he said.

While Bats is never happier than when he’sflying solo, battling the criminals of Gotham, and wearing silk kimonos in thepresence of his faithful manservant Alfred (Ralph Fiennes), his world is throwninto chaos with the arrival of his new sidekicks Robin (Michael Cera) andBatgirl, AKA Barbara Gordon, voiced by Rosario Dawson.

“Batman is an island onto himself, the onlything he doesn’t have is relationships,” says director Chris McKay. “We'remaking About a Boy as directed by (action director) Michael Mann.”

And on the side of villainy, there's TheJoker, voiced here by Zach Galifianakis. Expect a lot of people to pop up, LegoMovie-style, for cameos.“We’re nothing but exhaustive about thecameos and other characters that try to enter Batman’s life,” says McKay. We
thought if we can tell a well-rounded, funny story that’s action-packed, we can
build a big movie around this character. This is the movie we would want to
see.”

The movie is currently deep in productionin Australia completing the intricate 3-D and fully-Lego world as created bycomputer animation programs which follow the principles of existing Legobricks. “At first it doesn’t look like it’s all built in Lego. But as you get closer you realize it is,” says McKay. “We’re building an entire city, the Batcave and vehicles, going deep into Batman’s world.”

The LEGO Batman Movie is due out 10thFebruary 2017.
