Obsidian 'Moving Forward' On Pillars Of Eternity II, Studio Considering Kickstarter
The success story that is classic-RPG Pillars of Eternity for developer Obsidian Entertainment means a sequel was going to be inevitable, admits CEO Feargus Urquhart.
Officially it is not an announced project but Obsidian admit it's pointless to pretend they aren't going to be working on such a thing. "Obviously, as you’ve probably guessed, we’re starting to move forward on Eternity II," said Urquhart. They may return to Kickstarter.
"I think people felt like we delivered on our promise, and then that felt like we could go with Eternity II and people would support us again, because they trust us."
“Eternity II is not announced, it seems silly for me not to acknowledge it, though. If someone asks “Are you working on it?”, I respond “Well, wouldn’t you work on it?”. So then they say “So you must be working on it”, and then I’m like “Well, yeah”,” he added.
There have already been hints about Pillars of Eternity II from Obsidian game designer Josh Sawyer. He alluded to a new setting as it would move out of Drywood, and occupy a 'less traditional' setting for a fantasy RPG.
Obsidian is currently developing Tyranny, a new IP, which is to be published under Paradox Interactive. It's a different take from the usual offering where the 'bad guys' have already won the day, and now we are in a position of significant power to 'set the rules' for what that means to everyday people. Decisions and repercussions play big roles.
Urquhart also teased there's another smaller team within Obsidian working on something new as well. Does Obsidian need to turn to Kickstarter to fund Pillars of Eternity II? Considering the success of the first for backers and cRPG fans, not many are likely to have a problem with it being crowd-funded again. It's perhaps the best form of consent from the community that they hunger for more.
Tyranny is currently in development for PC and is due in 2016.
