Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks is to end its distribution partnership with Disney next year, according to reports.

Both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have said DreamWorks would not renew the deal when it expires in August with DreamWorks likely to do a deal with Universal instead.

Spielberg founded DreamWorks with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen in 1994 and have an impressive roster of hit movies including Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan and American Beauty.

It’s likely that Spielberg’s The BFG – which is released in July next year - will be the last movie distributed by Disney, bringing to an end a distribution partnership since 2009.

DreamWorks Animation, which made the Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon series, became a separate company in 2004.

The next film DreamWorks film to be released will be Spielberg’s own Bridge of Spies, a cold war thriller starring Tom Hanks, which comes out in the US on 16 October.
