Disney Animation Cancels Gigantic

Those pesky creative differences have felled the giant with one swift blow of an axe as Disney’s Gigantic is cancelled by the house of mouse.

As IGN reports, the movie, which was set to release in 2020, was to be hip modern take on the famous Jack and the Beanstalk fable. In this version Jack discovers a world of giants in the clouds, including the 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old Inma, who he agrees to help on her journey home.

Gigantic was being developed as a musical comedy, with Nathan Greno (Tangled) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) sharing directorial duties.

Oscar-winning songwriter duo Robert and Kristen Anderson-Lopez were also contributing to the animated feature following their work on Frozen.

Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios President Ed Catmull commented on the creative issues: "It's impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn’t working.

"With Gigantic, we've come to that point, and although it's a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now. We are focusing our energies on another project that has been in the works, which we'll be sharing more about soon, now set for Thanksgiving 2020."

Gigantic was supposed to be the next Disney Animated feature after Frozen 2, which we now know is dropping in 2019 alongside Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King.
