The Crown’s Claire Foy has been confirmed as Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web.

Sony Pictures have of course already adapted The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which was directed by David Fincher and starred Rooney Mara as Salander who was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Salander.

However, despite Fincher’s willingness to return to direct the rest of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novel series – The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicking A Hornets’ Nest which were due to be shot back to back - various delays mean that the likelihood of both actor and director returning to round-out the trilogy eventually dwindled.

Instead, Sony Pictures has decided to push forward with The Girl in the Spider’s Web, an adaptation of the fourth novel in the Millennium series by David Lagercrantz, directed by Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe), and featuring an entirely new cast.

Chief amongst that cast is Foy, who is now the third person to play Salander after Mara and Noomi Rapace, who played Salander in the Swedish-made Millennium trilogy.

Director Alvarez said:

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander. Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth. I can’t wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its center.”

The Girl in the Spider’s Web hits cinemas Oct, 5 2018.
