Creative Assembly Announce 'Total War Saga' Series

In between major historical Total War games from developer Creative Assembly they will be releasing smaller but more focused Total War Saga games.

The studio reveal these won't span the huge amount of time found in their grand campaigns but instead look to specific moments in history, which they have explored before with Total War: Shogun 2 when they launched the Fall of the Samurai expansion.

The big titles like Rome or Empire cover huge eras and Napoleon or Attila revolved around singular figures, but Total War Saga looks to pivotal moments that happened which might unfold over weeks or a few months.

"These moments are perfect fuel for Total War. They’re a powder keg, where anything can happen and history could have gone in any direction. Sagas are epic stories, and we felt that name described those moments well, and allows us to go into the kind of individual detail we love. So, Total War Saga games will be the same mix of turn-based campaign strategy, real-time battle tactics and hundreds if not thousands of hours of gameplay as a regular Total War game, but focussed down on a distinct moment," said game director Jack Lusted.

Lusted explains a little more saying these Saga spin-offs won't visit time periods that aren't already part of a major Total War release, and instead likely revisit titles such as Rome 2 etc. They aren't going to introduce something groundbreaking but play off existing systems.

"They’ll have a narrower focus, but they will still be the epic sandboxes players are familiar with. Again, Fall of the Samurai is a perfect example of this. The period covered in that game was compressed down to a few months but a lot happened within those months. Future Total War Saga games may also cover time periods that short where a lot happens, while others may cover conflicts spanning a couple of decades but still focused on a single geographic area."

As for what will debut the Total War Saga series, he hints at something coming for Rome II in the vein of Total War: ATTILA with the Age of Charlemagne.

Right now Creative Assembly is developing Total War: WARHAMMER 2 for PC that releases September 28th, 2017.
