Warner Bros. Developing Stand-Alone Joker Origin Movie

Warner Bros. are developing a stand-alone origin movie for the Joker that won’t be part of the DCEU.

The movie will come under a new banner of the studio that will further explore the DC Comics characters at their disposal in new and interesting ways which will kick off with the Joker.

Warner Bros. already have The Hangover direct Todd Philips in place to direct and co-write the project with 8 Mile writer Scott Silver. Perhaps the biggest news in terms of its development is that none other than Martin Scorsese will be producing the film. However, The Hollywood Reporter has cautioned that his involvement at this stage is fluid.

THR also report that the film will star a new actor in the role, pointing to a possible 1980s setting. While there isn’t a great desire to see a stand-alone Joker origin story – the character tends to work best when shorn of all origins – but it at least opens the outlier edges of the DC universe for exploration. However it’s a curious move, the DCEU had wobbled until Wonder Woman’s success straightened the burgeoning banner out, so set up another banner to explore something that hasn’t been long established speaks of a lack of confidence in what has come before. Just what this means for Jared Leto’s Joker remains to be seen. Also, it seems odd to throw open alternative universes such as the Elseworld stories and perhaps even Mark Millar’s Red Son, if The Flash movie is going to feature the universe-shattering events of Flashpoint – perhaps this banner will be spun out from the events of that film?

It remains to be seen just what will happen with The Joker both in the DCEU and now outside of it.
