Danny Boyle to Make Trainspotting 2 His Next Film

Fielding questions while promoting upcoming biopic Steve Jobs Danny Boyle let slip a few tantalising details about the long mooted follow up to Trainspotting.

The script, written by original writer John Hodge, is said to be ‘terrific’ and Boyle himself has told Deadline that ‘all the four main actors want to come back and do it’.

A follow up already exists in the form of Irvine Welsh’s 2002 novel Porno, which picks up the action a decade later. Renton is a nightclub owner in Amsterdam; Begbie is fresh out of prison and looking for revenge on whoever has been anonymously sending him gay porn whilst inside; Sick Boy has a new venture in ‘adult’ entertainment and Spud is either on the verge of ending it all or discovering everything there is to know about Leith.

Boyle was not a fan of the book, saying as much in 2010: “It’s not a great book in the way that Trainspotting is genuinely a masterpiece. But we’ve been doing some work on it, and it’s got potential, for sure. When the moment's right, I think we will approach it."

That moment appears to be now – Hodge’s script is complete and Boyle intends to make it his next film. Now it's only a matter of getting all [the actors'] schedules together," says the director, "which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.” Johnny Lee Miller (Sick Boy) remains busy with Elementary, and Robert Carlyle (Begbie) is a regular on Once Upon A Time.

Steve Jobs is out in the UK on November 13th.
