Brie Larson in Talks for Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is moving full steam ahead. First, Room star Brie Larson emerged as the frontrunner for the title role and now a shortlist of potential directors has been drummed up to lead the charge of the Carol Corps.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Larson is in early talks for the role but with the film not due for another two years, it seems likely that we’ll see Carol Danvers in another Phase Three movie, much in the same fashion as our introduction to Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War…perhaps even Thor: Ragnarok given that it’ll be set largely off-world.

As for the directors lined up to tell the story of Danvers – a USAF pilot turned Kree-empowered superhuman – two names are leading the way, Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook).

It’s believed that Marvel Studios wants a female director to helm their first female superhero movie and Caro, a New Zealand director whose credits include Whale Rider and whose next release is The Zookeeper’s Wife starring Jessica Chastain and Daniel Brühl and Kent, who only has the one credit (but what a credit) in The Babadook, are leading the way.

While there’s nothing in place just yet, there is a script by Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote Pixar's Inside Out. Larson will next be seen in Legendary’s monster movie Kong: Skull Island, which she recently wrapped, and she also is reuniting with her Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton for the drama The Glass Castle, which shoots this summer.
