James Cameron Wants To Make a New Terminator Trilogy

James Cameron is no stranger to multi-movie franchises – he’s currently working on precisely 87,000 Avatar sequels – so it comes as no surprise that he’s already talking up a new trilogy of Terminator movies.

With the current Terminator franchise on its last robo-legs thanks to the one-two disappointment of Terminator Salvation and Terminator: Genisys, Cameron, who will soon hold the rights to the franchise once again, is working on a reboot with Deadpool director Tim Miller – which we now know could be three movies.

Cameron said

“The question is — has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up? Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence).…

"I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it.

"We’ll put more meat on the bones if we get past the next couple of hurdles as and when we announce that.”

These quotes leave a lot to still be confirmed; just how much of the old franchise will remain? What will the rebooted Terminator be about? How big a part will Arnold Schwarzenegger play? (He’s already confirmed that he will return but in what capacity?)

It’s an interesting proposition and hopefully one that Cameron and Miller can deliver on.
