Marvel's New Warriors 'Tailor-Made' for Spin-Offs

With the recent announcement that Marvel’s New Warriors would be heading to TV with the Freeform network, we learned that amongst the warriors, who are a group of teenage heroes dealing with both real life and superhero problems, will be Doreen Green AKA Squirrel Girl.

However, it seems the plan may be to spin out each as-yet-unnamed member of the New Warriors into their own individual series'. Recently Executive VP of Programming and Development at Freeform Karey Burke spoke to THR about what can be expected from the new series. Including the possibility of future spin-offs:

“Absolutely. The characters they’ve chosen are all really singular and could each carry the show that they’re on. They’re bound together as a band of underdogs for as long as we choose with this show but it’s conceptually tailor-made for spin-offs.”

Just who will be teaming up with Squirrel Girl (who, if she is front and centre of this series, is safe to say, won’t get her own standalone series) is difficult to say. Given that we don’t really know where New Warriors fits in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – like the way the various Netflix series and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. do. Burke was not asked specifically about the series being a part of the MCU. However, when questioned about whether New Warriors and Cloak and Dagger, which will also make it’s bow on Freeform, connect to each other, Burke did drop a little bit of a hint:

“It’s a great question. If you know these two properties, they’re not particularly connected. There are many degrees of separation with where they fall in the Marvel universe. But anything is possible with Marvel. Their tones are so wildly different. Cloak is this angst-filled achingly beautiful heartfelt romantic drama. And Squirrel Girl is a balls-out comedy.”

Who knows, Squirrel Girl could just be about to take the Marvel Universe out onto a completely new branch.
