Get Out's Jordan Peele Reportedly Offered Akira Adaptation

Following on from live-action adaptations of Ghost in the Shell and Death Note, the granddaddy of them all, Akira, the anime adaptation that stubbornly refuses to be adapted, is pressing ahead once again with Get Out’s Jordan Peele being courted as director.

According to The Tracking Board, Peele is now the number one candidate to direct the live-action Akira, and talks between the director and the studio are described as “encouraging”. The site also mentions that Peele would be taking a pass at the script penned by Marco Ramirez (Daredevil) if he were to helm the project.

The current script dates to 2015, where Mad Max: Fury Road’s George Miller was up for the director’s gig, but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts. More recently, Justin Lin was being considered, as well as David F. Sandberg and Daniel Espinosa.

Get Out has been an unqualified success for Warner Bros. and given that it’s central component is race relations, it might be a smart move considering other anime adaptations track record of white washing predominantly Asian characters.
