Director Doug Liman Leaves Gambit for Justice League Dark

You have to feel for Gambit. That movie just can’t catch a break at the moment. No sooner has it found a director in the form of The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman, he jumps ship to DC’s Justice League Dark.

Feeling very much like the last mutant standing, Channing Tatum is still on board to star in the stand alone X-Men movie, but, once again, the film is looking for a new director after both Rise of the Planet Of The Apes' Rupert Wyatt and now, Liman, who was wrestling with a script rewrite, have abandoned ship.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest development was a "mutual parting of the ways", probably involving some of those same script problems, Josh Zetumer is still at work on the screenplay, which Fox hopes to have shooting in January, though obviously whoever comes aboard now will face a race to get the movie made.

But what of Justice League Dark? (Finally! A dark, edgy DC movie!)  Originally, the movie featuring the darker side of the DCEU with characters such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Zatanna, was set to be directed by Guillermo del Toro – who has now jumped ship to concentrate on other projects, including The Shape of Water.

Liman's involvement in Justice League Dark seems to suggest a tonal shift from del Toro's natural inclination towards horror and Liman's own proclivity for thrillers with an ensemble cast.
