The BFG New Trailer Stomps In

Set your faces to aww! as the latest BFG trailer promises the kind of wonder only director Steven Spielberg can deliver.

Following on from December’s teaser,Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Big Friendly Giant recalls some of thedirector’s earlier work – bringing the same level of whimsy and wonder we’veseen in the likes of E.T and Close Encounters of the Third Kind to the acerbic witof Dahl’s original text – a perfect combination, if we do say so ourselves.

The new footage starts much as the originaldid, with Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) awake at the "witching hour" – threein the morning, according to her – and suddenly snatched up by the titlecharacter, broug ht to life via performance capture by Oscar winner MarkRylance

Then we're off to Giant Country, as Sophie discovers a whole new world of friendship with her enormous new pal, some beautiful landscapes and some perilous danger along the way. She’s not helpedby the BFG himself who’s considered a runt by his fellows – including Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) – who are always on the lookoutfor tasty "human beans" to eat. The BFG, meanwhile, prefers to dine
on snozzcumbers, and spends his nights sending good dreams into kids' brains.

There are some wonderful, indelible imagesin this trailer too; take the shot of the BFG slowly creeping in the shadows ofa London street and the soulful face of Rylance as he cradles young sophie inhis enormous hands.

However, there are concerns. Some of theeffects look unfinished – perhaps a curse of such a movie that it must bemarketed before the actual film is finished – but, given that work willcontinue right up to its release date, it won’t ever look ready for the bigscreen until its being projected onto one.

The official synopsis reads: “The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a gianthimself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants ofGiant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of
smell, he is endearin gly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part.

“Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle.

“Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie,a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of themysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realizethat the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met agiant before, has many questions.

“The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Countrywhere he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about themagic and mystery of dreams. Having both been on their own in the world upuntil now, their affection for one another quickly grows, but Sophie’s presencein Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, whohave become increasingly more bothersome.

“Sophie and the BFG soon depart for Londonto see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (RebeccaHall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to getrid of the giants once and for all.”The BFG looms into theaters on July 1,
2016.
