Fear Effect Reinvented Announced

Square Enix is dusting off the original Fear Effect circa 2000 from the PlayStation one era, and they've announced a remake called Fear Effect Reinvented for 2018.

It will feature all the fancy visuals of the modern day but beyond that they haven't said much. This is also a 'true remake' and not some reboot for the series. The cel-shaded gritty tale will be coming to PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and even Nintendo Switch.

"Working on the improved graphics will be the biggest challenge. In the 1999 game, lots of the atmosphere relied on imagination - the low definition textures forced the players to create images in their heads. With today's high definition, a lot of the work we'll do will be creating high definition objects and textures, while staying true to the original atmosphere," said Sushee CEO Benjamin Anseaume.

The teams admit it is a little difficult bringing those PSone textures to today's standards without sacrificing what the original capture with its visual style, but they seem confident with what they've cooked up so far. "Graphics, of course, as you can see in the announcement trailer... we tried to find a very modern, yet respectful artistic direction - and I must say we're very excited with what we've done so far," added creative director Thibaut Romaggi.

Fear Effect Reinvented releases on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Switch in 2018.
