Unsurprisingly, the first images for Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface are pretty bloody.

Pitched as ‘Leatherface begins’ the film will slice through the convoluted backstory which last reared its ugly head in 2013’s Texas Chainsaw 3D, one of the few post-2010 movies featuring one of cinemas horror icons, which added a few nonsensical twists as tried justified its existence by setting itself up as a direct follow up to the original 1974 movie.

However, that film earned $47 million at the box office on a modest budget of $15 million. Thus, a follow-up was commissioned in 2014, titled Leatherface. The centres on a quartet of escaped criminally-insane mental patients, and the nurse that they take hostage – where one of the patients just so happens to be the teenage version of the chainsaw wielding madman.

Stephen Dorff (Blade) plays the sheriff attempting to track down the maniacs before they can slaughter more innocents, while Lili Taylor (The Conjuring) portrays the Sawyer family matriarch Verna. The cast also includes Sam Strike (EastEnders), and Finn Jones (filmed prior to Marvel’s Iron Fist).

It's not clear why the film has been delayed for so long and, other than a tweet by producer Christa Campbell in May saying the film would finally see the light of day this October, there’s still no official release date in place for the film.

Directed by acclaimed filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (Inside) Leatherface is rumoured to slash its way into cinemas this October.
