Captain Marvel: Anne Boden and Ryan Fleck Hired to Direct
Brie Larson has been in place for a while as the titular Captain Marvel but the question of who was going to direct Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie remained…until now.
Today, Variety (via Empire) brings the news that Mississippi Grind duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have the job. After what was a lengthy search for a suitable director, with many female directors circling the project, the choice seems to fit Marvel’s edict of hiring indie directors with their own sensibility who seem ready to handle bigger projects.
The Half Nelson directors have also worked in TV on shows such as Billions.
According to Variety, the pair had a number of meetings with Kevin Feige and the Marvel team and impressed the bosses with their take on the character.
Guardians of the Galaxy’s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out's Meg LeFauve have been at work on the script, which will introduce the cinematic world to Carol Danvers, a skilled test pilot whose DNA is melded with that of Kree warrior Mar-Vell. Subsequently, she gains powers such as flight, enhanced strength, damage resistance and the ability to absorb and re-channel energy.
Captain Marvel is targeting an 8 March, 2019 release in the UK.
