Scarface: David Ayer Rumoured to Direct Reboot

Suicide Squad director David Ayer is in talks to direct a remake of Scarface staring Diego Luna.

It’s not the first time that Scarface has been remade. The iconic tale of excess that was the 1983 movie starring Al Pacino was itself a remake of the 1933 original staring Paul Muni in the role of Tony Montana.

Despite the indelible nature of Brian De Palma’s 1983 movie, Universal are pressing ahead with the remake. Antoine Fuqua was the most recent choice of director, but Fuqua had to leave the project due to scheduling issues.

Since then, a Scarface reboot director shortlist has emerged – although Ayer wasn’t originally on that list. Deadline is now reporting that David Ayer is in early talks to direct the Scarface remake/reboot.

Despite being recently known for Suicide Squad, Ayer has a history of making hard-hitting crime thrillers like Street Kings and End of Watch, so he seems like a good fit. He was also hired in 2011 to pen a draft of the remake.

What this means for Ayer’s involvement in the DCEU remains to be seen. Scarface is due next year and would take precedent over the recently announced and then delayed Gotham City Sirens.

In other interesting developments with the reboot, the Coen Brothers have also taken a pass at the script. So there's certainly some pedigree behind the project.

Scarface is due for release 18th August 2018.
