Hellboy Reboot to Explore 'Mature Themes'
David Harbour has been chatting about his forthcoming role as Hellboy in the reboot directed by horror veteran Neil Marshall.
According to Harbour, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen will tackle ‘mature themes’ – the original announcement promised the movie would be ‘a hard R-rated take on the character’ – but that rating won’t be down to the violence or gore.
“It goes R not for reasons of nudity,” he said. “It goes R for a bit of gore and horror, but also a bit of just the mature aspect of it, the mature themes of it. Just that we’re dealing with complicated subjects. It’s a real character piece. Of course, it has huge action elements to it, but we’ve modelled it somewhat on Shakespeare. I mean, it’s a bit like Hamlet. It really is this study of this man going through this horrible conundrum and we really get to go in deep with him.”
Marshall’s differing directorial style and character driven approach will clearly help delineate the reboot from Del Toro’s two Hellboy movies – which some fans were hoping to would be extended to three movies – clearly mark this film as one to watch.
Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen has yet to receive an official release date.
