It’s been confirmed. Ben Affleck will star, direct and co-write a standalone Batman.

The news broke from this year’s Comic Con while Affleck was on promotional duties for his role as the Dark Knight in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The plan is for Affleck to starts working on his next directorial project, the adaptation of Dennis Lehane's Live by Night, in November, and then after that, the Dark Knight returns (with the small matter of the odd appearance in Suicide Squad and the Justice League movies before that).

Affleck will be co-writing the movie - rumoured to be called The Batman - with DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns who’s also written some of the best remembered comic book series including Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Flash, Superman and, of course, Batman. He’s also written superheroes TV series Smallville, Arrow and the Supergirl project with Greg Berlanti for CBS.

In fact, Deadline reports that the pair have already found their rhythm and could turn in a script by as early the end of this summer – just before Affleck goes off to direct Live by Night.

The new Batman film may then even begin production in 2016. The story of the film will apparently follow where the character of Batman ends up after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League movies.
