Good propaganda can win wars – that’s why, when facing down the ubiquitous shadow of the Nazi party, America sent the best filmmakers it could to turn the war narrative against Hitler.

That’s the story of Five Came Back – a brand new documentary from Netflix which is based upon Mark Harris' excellent book which chronicles what happened during World War II when the US Armed Forces gathered some of the greatest working filmmakers – Frank Capra, John Ford, George Stevens, John Huston, and William Wyler – and sent them on assignment to make propaganda reels to show in American cinemas to boost morale and underline the necessity of the war effort.

The film charts the impact of the filmmakers work upon culture in the states, not to mention effects that war had upon their own art.

Written by Harris, and featuring both archive material with the likes of Capra and new interviews with directors including Paul Greengrass, Guillermo del Toro, Lawrence Kasdan and Francis Ford Coppola, the documentary, narrated by Meryl Streep, Five Came Back will make its debut on Netflix from 31st March.
