The long-gestating Galaxy Quest TV series has received a new lease of life after comedian Paul Scheer was tapped to pen the script.

According to Screen Rant, Amazon’s reimagining of the 1999 original movie, which starred Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell and Enrico Colantoni, will again feature the cast of a cancelled but beloved sci-fi show that was forced to reunite to save the planet after aliens believe their show was real.

Scheer takes over from the film’s original writer Robert Gordon who will stay on to executive produce. Scheer has a long list of writing credits including six episodes of The League, Filthy Preppy Teen$, NTSF:SD:SUV, and Funny or Die also appear on his writing resume.

As an actor, Scheer has appeared in The League, Veep, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock and Upright Citizens Brigade.

Before Scheer was hired, the TV series was moving at a pace until Alan Rickman sadly passed away and Tim Allen was lost thanks to his Last Man Standing series. Rickman is irreplaceable and his lost was felt most keenly by fans of the original film. It remains to be seen whether his character Dr. Lazarus will be written out of the show.

However, it now seems with Last Man Standing being cancelled it seems that the series is back on.
