Wonder Woman Movie Hits A Speedbump As Director Departs

DC's Wonder Woman movie may still be two years out, but it just hit a snag as its director Michelle MacLaren has departed the project.

In their official statement, Warner Bros. stated "Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together".

This split of director and studio over creative differences echoes recent events with Marvel. Patty Jenkins was initially set to direct Thor 2 before creative differences struck. Meanwhile, Edgar Wright abandoned Ant-Man at the eleventh hour for the same reason. It has to be wondered if in the lucrative superhero genre the studios aren't starting to demand too much control over their products to make seasoned directors leave.

The movie, which is set to star Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious 7) in the title role, will be the first superhero movie from either major company since their revival in 2008 that will be focused around a single female lead. Michelle MacLaren, whose directorial experience includes Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones, was also set to be the first female director on a superhero movie before leaing the project.

Wonder Woman is currently slated for a June 23, 2017 release in the US and it's unknown at this time if Michelle MacLaren's departure will affect this date.
