A new Blade Runner 2049 short has confirmed that David Bautista’s character is a replicant.

The second of three shorts intended to bridge the gap between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, is directed by Ridley Scott’s son, Luke Scott and focuses on Bautista’s Sapper Mortan, a replicant on the run who’s struggling to get by in the harsh future of 2048. The ending also seems to directly set up Sapper’s eventual confrontation with Ryan Gosling’s K in the sequel.

The previous short 2036: Nexus Dawn – focused on Jared Leto’s Niander Wallace, the blind villain of the story who demonstrates in gruesome detail just how loyal this new breed of replicants can be. It also revealed that replicants have been outlawed ever since the ‘blackout’ of 2022 with Wallace making a very compelling case to lift the ban.

As for Blade Runner 2049, it looks set to be director Dennis Villeneuve’s highest grossing film – it’s currently projected to earn $40 million in its opening weekend.

Blade Runner 2049 is due in cinemas on October 6, 2017.
