It’s nearly time to fire up a fresh batch of coffee as Showtime have announced the premiere date for the long-awaited return of Twin Peaks.

Showtime President David Nevins announced at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour that the revival of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s acclaimed series would return on Sunday, May 21st with a two-hour premiere. It was also announced that the third and fourth episodes will be available immediately following the premiere to Showtime subscribers. In addition, Nevins finally confirmed the number of episodes for the new season, revealing it will consist of 18 instalments.

The show had a very different approach to the crafting episodes, with Lynch and Frost working from one complete script before deciding in the edit how many episodes to divide the footage into.

Nevins said: "David Lynch is one of the great film masters of my lifetime. I think the version of Twin Peaks you're going to see is the pure heroin version of Twin Peaks and I'm very excited to be putting that out.”

He went on to add: "the original social media show, it was the original discussion show, before any of the tools of social media and fan engagement really existed. That's why David's so particular about secrecy. It will really reward close watching."

Showtime's Gary Levine added: "It's hard to fathom what Twin Peaks in a social media world will be and we're really looking forward to the ride."
