Warner Bros. to Adapt Five Nights at Freddy's

Warner Bros. have picked up the rights to popular/infuriating game Five Nights at Freddy’s.

The video game series, created by Scott Cawthon, takes place inside a nightmarish version of Chuck-E-Cheese (so just a regular Chuck-E-Cheese then?) where an animatronic animal band perform winsome kiddy songs by day and go on murderous rampages by night. You play as a security guard locked inside the restaurant at night where you must survive knowing that a furry little death machine could pop out at any time and murder you to death!

The feature adaptation will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment as well as Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions.

“We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith to the Hollywood Reporter.

"The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to," said Cawthon.

And by ‘relate to’ he means ‘pay money for’ such is the rampant, naked cash in that has become the series which so far has spawned 3 games in just over 8 months. So while the idea does lend itself to a movie adaptation, after all the convoluted backstory is crying out for a horrifying origins story, it inevitably has the feel of a cash grab.

The project is currently out to writers.
