Remedy's Quantum Break Gets Boxed PC And Steam Release Mid-September, Ditches UWP For DX11

Remedy Entertainment's time-bending Quantum Break, which also blends in a bit of TV drama, will no longer be held captive to Microsoft's own Windows Store for PC.

It will be getting a full release on Steam next month following its release earlier in April for PC and Xbox One. The PC version had a rather troubled start with significant framerate stuttering and even a cap of 50fps on 60Hz monitor displays. Remedy eventually released a huge 27GB patch.

The Steam re-release of Quantum Break will be joined by a boxed launch as well for PC, with Nordic Games distributing the Quantum Break: Timeless Collector's Edition the same day. This CE will include a Making Of Blu-ray, a book, the game's soundtrack and posters.

"After having worked with Remedy on the PC version of Alan Wake in 2012, and with Microsoft Studios on Ori and The Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (2016), and State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition (2016), we are proud to announce a new triangle-collaboration with two of our trusted partners," said Reinhard Pollice from Nordic.

Most interestingly is the absence of Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform (UWP) which is necessary for Direct12 support and also locks apps or video games to Windows 10. The boxed and Steam release of Quantum Break ditches UWP and DX12 for DirectX 11 instead, meaning Windows 7 users can play it. UWP has been criticised by industry figures.

"This DX11 version of the game includes all updates released for the Windows 10 version since launch," reveals the official Remedy Entertainment website.

Quantum Break and the Quantum Break: Timeless Collector's Edition will be releasing on PC through Steam and in retail stores September 14th, respectively.
